Stairs Lab

Steel staircase railings made to measure

A stair railing has to be strong, comfortable in the hand and good to look at. We draw it, laser-cut it and weld it in our own workshop, for a new staircase or to replace an old balustrade.

Which railing style for your staircase

  • Vertical rods: the classic, robust and easy to maintain, in round or square bar
  • Bespoke rod patterns: slanted rods or a pattern, so the railing becomes part of the interior
  • Horizontal rails or tensioned cables: a lighter, contemporary look. They can be climbed, so we advise by building type and by who uses the stair
  • Glass infill: an open view, with laminated glass held in a steel profile
  • Laser-cut pattern: the cut sheet is the guardrail, as on our Serdica model
  • Handrail in tube, flat bar or profile, straight or curved, at a diameter that sits well in the hand

Railings for straight, turning and helical stairs

We make the railing for every staircase we build: straight, L-shaped, with a landing, on a central column or helical. On a curved stair the handrail is bent and continuous, with no joints at angles. Fixing is to the stringer, on the side or on top of the treads, or to a base plate.

Finish and durability

  • Powder coating: black, graphite, white or any RAL colour, for interiors and sheltered areas
  • Hot-dip galvanising: for exterior stairs and damp environments
  • Paint: possible depending on the environment and lead time
  • Fabrication to EN 1090-2, with welding and quality control in our own workshop

Height and safety

Railing heights and the gap between rods depend on the country and the type of building (housing, public, commercial, industrial). We apply the rules of your site and work to the drawings approved by your engineer or control body.

How to get a quote

  • A plan, a survey or a sketch (DWG, DXF, IFC, PDF or a photo with dimensions)
  • The length to protect, the height and the slope
  • The support: concrete, steel or timber
  • The style you want and the finish
  • The delivery address

We come back with shop drawings and a price.

Questions we hear often

Which railing should I choose for an indoor staircase?

Vertical rods are the most robust and the simplest to live with. Cables, glass or a laser-cut pattern give a lighter or more graphic look. We advise by home, children and budget.

What height does a stair railing need?

It depends on the country and the type of building. We apply the rule that applies to your site in the drawings, to be confirmed with your engineer or control body.

Can you make a cable or glass railing?

Yes. Cables are tensioned between steel posts and laminated glass is held in a profile. You can compare rods, rails, cables and glass in our 3D configurator.

Powder-coated or galvanised?

Powder coating suits interiors and gives a choice of RAL colour. Hot-dip galvanising protects better outdoors. The two can be combined.

Can you make a railing for an existing staircase?

Yes. From a survey and photos we draw a custom steel guardrail or handrail that fits your stair.

Do you deliver abroad?

Yes. Our railings are made in our workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria, and delivered to France, Germany and across Europe. Price and lead time are given with the quote.
